CURATE THIS! 2010 is going global!
…on the ground AND in cyberland.

December 22, 2009 – CURATE THIS! 2010, the second installment of the CURATE THIS! exhibition series created by BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art, is evolving from a one city-wide event location into a global arts cultural exchange event involving multiple venues located in multiple cities around the world. The global art design exhibition will take place from July 1 – December 31, 2010.

Through the exhibition of works of art design by emerging artists, designers, duos, groups and collectives around the world, The BECA Foundation aims to facilitate an experimental, cross-pollination of creative innovation and new ideas in diverse locations around the world. The title, ‘CURATE THIS!’ reflects a departure from the familiar large scale exhibition model, typically curated by a singular vision with one head curator, to an exhibition with components and related events ‘curated’ by the public and professional and independent participants residing in multiple cities around the world. The first ‘CURATE THIS!’ experiment took place in early 2008 and led artists and directors, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough to begin brainstorming the expansion of the experiment to bring about greater benefits to a larger number of participants.

BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and the core belief system at The BECA Foundation is that “New art new design fuels the best of what’s yet to come on this planet.” To help mix that fuel and kick start new possibilities, the expansion of the CURATE THIS! exhibition project will facilitate a broader exposure of new art, new design and new ideas through both a physical and online network of participating venues in multiple cities around the world. The aim of building the network is to create international arts cultural exchange opportunities, broaden arts education opportunities and appreciation for emerging contemporary art design, facilitate introductions and lay the foundation for future collaborations toward the realization of a progressive, meaningful and fulfilling future for everyone. Global online content delivery of exhibition events and related special projects will enable global participation by millions around the world. The BECA Foundation is pleased to welcome the participation of Helen Pheby, PhD, Curator of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK whose research and curatorial work spans the globe including the US and Iraq and Ellen Lupton, legendary design educator and Curator of Contemporary Design at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Each has a unique insight which will add further depth and diversity to new CURATE THIS! 2010 exhibition components.

Upcoming participating venues in Boston, New Orleans, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and London have been the first locations to sign on. Venue participation proposals have also been submitted by exclusively online communities. What's a Circle Song?
-It's a chant or round sung in a circle. We sing them at important events, celebrations, and at the turning of the seasons.

Why a Circle Song Night?
-Singing Circle Songs on the Winter Solstice is a tradition in my hometown. Soul Underground, a great cafe and live music venue, has been kind enough to open their doors (free of charge!) so that I can continue the tradition far from home.

No prior Circle Song knowledge or musical know-how is required. I will teach all the songs during the course of the evening. The songs are very short with simple, repetitive melodies. The only instrument is the human voice. Just bring yourself.

Who Am I?
-I am from a small fishing town (well, village, technically) in Maine in the US. The Circle Song tradition has been part of the region where I grew up for generations. I minored in Ethnomusicology in college and my mental library of Circle Songs from all over grew. Creating music this way is truly magical, and singing with other people, be they strangers or friends, on the longest night of the year, is always a blast.

Antonio Muntadas (*1942 in Barcelona, Spain) has lived and worked in New York since 1971. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, and investigations of channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works in different media such as photography, video, publications, internet and multi-media installations. 

His works have been exhibited throughout the world, including the Venice Biennale, Documenta Vl and X in Kassel, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Berkeley Art Museum in California.

Muntadas is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Time, space and language are the main subjects of Piotr Zamojski. His materials are preexisting situations: interiors, public space, landscapes and, more recently also objects of daily use. He analyses different aspects of a given space: its former and present functions, proportions and relations to a geographic and socio-cultural context. A second step is an interpretation of reality through the means of wall-painting, sculpture and typography. Some works have a processual character: they have been transformed during a presentation time.
Zamojski works can be understood as a reflection upon the nature of reality, history, space and time as fictional fields. He is trying to follow paths of personal, ethnic and cultural identities, common fates: yearnings, fears, coincidences and errors.

Piotr Zamojski, *1963 in Poland, lives in Germany. Since 2008 visiting professor at the Sungshin Women's University in Seoul. Selected exhibitions:

Description:

This project brings various techniques and approaches to contemporary art into one exhibition. Organized according to their characteristics, the body of work is divided into three parts. The first part is “Museum & Art,” and shows the strength of contemporary Korean art. The second is “Museum & Society,” which focuses on the social relevance of art; and the third is “Museum & Vision,” which shows the future of art as envisioned by the artsits. This section of the exhibition includes Seo-Bo PARK (painting), Moon Seop SHIM (sculpture), Soocheon JHEON (installation), Hong-Goo KANG (photography), Geun-Taek YOO (Asian painting/ animation), Soo Jeong KIM (design), and Hoon MOON (architecture).

The Space Transformation Project will be held inside and outside of the former Defense and Security Complex (main building, basement, cafeteria, library, and surrounding space). It anticipates the transformation of the former Kimusa site born into an art museum. The participating artists include: Kyuchul AHN, Jeong Hwa CHOI, Ok-Sang LIM, and U-Ram CHOE.

The Documentary Project participants include Kyungwon MOON, the video artist, and Dong-Hyun PARK, the experimental film director. They examined the images of Kimusa that people have in their minds, and unfolded them in documentary format.

‘Sori Art’ is a new collaboration between Master Taegum artist Hyelim Kim and innovative Australian composer Leah Barclay. The concert will feature six new electroacoustic works fusing Korean traditional music with the infinite possibilities of technology.

A native of Korea, Hyelim Kim is a pioneer musician/composer in fusion music developing a new aspect of Korean traditional music in taegum (Korean traditional flute) performance, improvisation and composition. She earned a BA and an MA in Korean traditional music at Seoul National University, which is her original resource of musical inspiration. Upon graduating, she was recommended as an excellent performer to enter the “Nationwide Korean Traditional Music Concert for New Performers”. She has been appointed as Young Artist from the Korean council in 2009 and Kumho Cultural Foundation in 2006. Along with the practical activities, Hyelim Kim has a further commitment to explore the way Korean music has interacted with various kinds of music to make a new heterogeneous musical culture by doing a PhD at the University of Sydney. www.hyelimkim.com

Leah Barclay 
Leah Barclay is an award winning Australian interdisciplinary artist. She was the recipient of the 2009 Asialink Performing Artist Residency for Korea and is based at art center nabi for three months developing a series of works integrating traditional music and modern technology. Her current work explores hybrid media and experimental sonic languages fusing the spontaneity of live performance with the infinite possibilities of technology. Since graduating from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, she has performed, published and produced commissioned works across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, India and Korea.  www.leahbarclay.com

Korea is rapidly developing into a multicultural society as well as becoming more integrated into the world community through trade agreements, security pacts and tourism. The years 2010-2012 have been designated Visit Korea Years. This exhibition is therefore both timely and relevant to the current climate in Korea.

The 18 artists taking part all live in Korea. They come from 7 different countries; speak different languages and have grown up in cultures very different from the one in which they now find themselves living. The group includes both young emerging artists as well as experienced internationally recognized artists. The ages of the artists span almost three generations, they originate from 7 countries spanning 4 Continents. The style of art ranges from modern to traditional and includes painting, print, video, photography and installation works.

Despite so many differences these artists have come together because they share a mutual interest in communicating with the world through their art in a spirit of multicultural co-operation.

CJ Picture Book Exhibition - KFCC gallery, Seoul, Nov 23 - Dec 24

The CJ Culture Foundation will be holding the 2nd CJ Picture Book Festival at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center from November 23 through December 24. The exhibition will present 100 works for the New Publication Category and 50 for the Illustration Category, selected from hundreds of works submitted by publishers and artists from around the world.

Kveta Pacovska, popular with children worldwide for her illustrated books, will be invited to the exhibition to introduce her unique three-dimensional picture books that engage all five senses. Special events to be held in conjunction with the exhibition include a picture book forum, picture book animation screenings and a picture book library.

Picture books have already established themselves as a cultural resource for people of all ages and both sexes. Rather than remain mere as paper books as in the past, they have been recreated as valuable cultural content, breaking the barriers between genres and combining with diverse media to create new aesthetic forms.

The founder of Entertainment & Technology Center of Carnegie Mellon University, Professor, Don Marilline will talk about new poetics of digital generation. Start mentioning about creation of digitalism, he will also discuss its diverse usage and new way of storytelling from poetics of Aristotle to interactive narrative of Janet Jackson.

For the opening performance, there will be electroacoustic performance, ‘Juxtapose’ together with residence artist Leah Barclay from Asialink and art center nabi and korean percussionist, Yoon Sang, Choi.

Opening Performance: Juxtapose
‘Juxtapose’ is one of three major compositions completed during an Asialink residency at art centre nabi in 2009. The work is composed for janggu and live electronics and is performed by leading Korean percussionist Yoon Sang, Choi. The electronics feature sound recordings from Seoul ranging from the serenity of the Buddhist temple bells to the unnerving civil defense drill siren. Conceptually the work reveals some of the enticing sonic layers of the city and the intense contrast that exist in Seoul. All of the electronic source material has been extensive processed to create an abstract soundscape that intertwines with the surging energy of the city and whispers of the past.

Yoon Sang, Choi
Yoon Sang, Choi is a leading Korean percussionist who has been involved in a diversity of projects to rearrange Korean traditional music for modern audiences. He invented the electronic hour glass drum called “super janggu” in collaboration with professor YI doneung at Seoul National University. In 2003 he founded the band “wHOOL,” an ensemble who now have an international reputation performing at leading events in France, Belgium, Netherlands and the USA.

Lecturer
Jason Kahn is an artist working in the various fields including sound installation, performance and composition. He has given concerts and exhibited sound installations all over the world. Kahn creates his sound installations for specific spaces. The focus of these primarily non-visual works lies in the perception of space through sound. Kahn performs both solo and in collaboration and composes for electronics and acoustic instruments. He was born in New York and currently lived in Zürich.

Sean Snyder is a visual artist who has produced research-oriented projects focusing on image production and representation. Using examples from media, cinema, urban space and architecture his work analyzes the relation between image and text.
Recently, Sean Snyder has investigated the transformative role of the archive in relation to digital imaging technologies, developing a methodological approach to the structuring of information. Utilizing the interpretative potential of documents and databases, his work explores documentary practice as a historical construct, and more generally the underlying role of aesthetics in ideology and culture. Pink City consists of 6 shows including 12 artists.

Jaipur is a capital city of Rajasthan in India, where people call it Pink City. Dileep Sharma from Pink city, Jaipur enjoy experimenting the most typical and daily experiences by producing distinct figures. With gradual change by time, his progress of making every day images new comes out by tattooing humorous and odd figures of human body on India traditional clothes. He names it 'modeling tattoo' or Flash-back effect. He intends to make distinguishing border between everyday life and fantasy with his own outstanding stages in his works.
Pil-seung focuses on change of value of reproduced arts when they have value of commodities. For example, he allows his chandelier made of modeled mini toy cars to be a practical product (with practical function) and then shows it in a gallery. That is, a function of the ready-made is questionable to audiences. Value of arts in reality is sometimes vague, which he try to present.

Jannis Markopoulos from Greek works and lives in Berlin. His works are motivated by time between the present and the past. These two images conflict in one as if he tries to walk all through the present and the past. Mixed two layers already transformed to his own ideal land.
koh, A-bin brings power of shamanism out in her paintings, much related to a relationship between human and nature based on Asian community. She also pursues several experiments by researching religious allegories of the Middle ages in western and value of Shamanism in Asia. It comes with sensual images in her paintings. This two artists take two totally different allegories and often fuse into one in order to produce unfamiliar world with realistic images from both western and eastern. With their paintings, they succeed to escape from physical time.

Both Kaneko Nao and Yoon, Mi-yeon transform childhood fantasy and aspiration. Kaneko Nao paints women who wear Japanese traditional clothing with her outstanding perception on colors and composition. Her women portrait normally has uneasy gestures and stares at us, which make audiences feel far away from reality and strong. Yoon, Mi-yeon shows her ideal girls up. Her works reflect her experiences from her childhood in which she dreamed ideal girls with blond hair influenced by Barbie doll. It turns to her fantasy.

Fahrad Hussain from India illustrates people in daily life around us. His characters seem to be presented on a theater stage. They stand still, smiling but are painted by all achromatic colors with a glorious and colorful back stage. He presents paradox of people in daily life by revealing his cynical view and exaggerating characters. A metaphor of capitalism in both western and eastern appears to be 'still life' in his works.
Kim, Keun-joong is an artist who mixes two kinds of oriental paintings. His bloomedand glorious flowers are his emblem to present sense of the contemporary.

Both Markus Kiefer and Jung, Jae-ho visualize landscape by fusing nature, daily life, a view of cities and cultural circumstances. And now, documenting 'being here' is a method to preserve their individual experiences and perception. These each documents could also be a piece for re-composing their memories. Jung, Jae-ho paints landscapes with his private memories of 'being here' and video canvases for Markus Kiefer try to make a conversation with audiences by showing each different contexts.

Huub van der Loo from Netherlands allows us to visualize a city with huge pinky structures. For instance, he supposes to install enormous structures in New York. His pinky sculpture projected in reality reflects people's idea land and fantasies where there is no boundaries on certain place, culture and race. Whereas, Yoon, Jeong-mee shows difference and similarity from children with different cultures and races and presents specific goods related to children by arranging by color, for example 'pink & blue project'. For her, the project started with an interest of identity and gender in the very beginning. Now, she is more interested in tendencies for children from many countries and tries to analyze them as big mechanism in our society, for instance young girls who expecially love a color of pink.

Lisa Tagesson is a young artist from Sweden. She sews drawing on textile from her own experiences when traveling and installs them. Not only her distinct drawing, but she also chooses specific textile which has tradition and history and applies them into her trip for working. Seo, Bo-ram paints both oriental ornaments and icons of extravagance on antique furniture. Their different ornaments from different viewpoint become the making of imagination in between everyday life and fantasy.

Manit Sriwanichpoom and Lee, Sang-hyun show themselves up in their works. Lee, Sang-hyun takes a picture of himself with landscape he focuses on. In his photo, he becomes an observer in order to make a distance with certain historical places. He reveals nihilism and a sense of emptyness by describing black and white landscape of historical places. For example, he begins with a story of a empire in which a defeated emperor and 3,000 court ladies who suicided for the emperor in Backma river. In Manit's work, he shows a scene of a specific and historical place. He tries to bring an issue that there is no place peaceful out and criticize violence and wa by showing himself as a 'pink man' carrying shopping-cart in his work.

Cartoonists/writers wanted for collaborative project

We are currently looking for foreigners and Koreans who would be interested in taking part in a collaborative comic strip project.

The subject of the comics will be 'Tiger and Bear', a performance art project by James Topple and Colin Riddle based on the Korean myth of the tiger and the bear and the founding of Korea.

A lot can be said about it, but basically its two Englishmen in giant comedy animals heads, seeking a dialogue with Koreans about how their culture is changing and what place traditions have in the Korea of today as it under goes rapid modernization. One aspect of the project is that Tiger and Bear are interested in giving up control of their image by allowing others to interpret them and their project, which is where the comic comes in:

Seeing as we've had such a fantastic response we've decided we would like to get a variety of foreign artists to illustrate one 4 panel comic strip each, as opposed to choosing one artist to do them all.

Next we would like to find a variety of people, preferably Korean to come up with stories/dialogue. All they would need to do is sketch out a 4 panel storyboard with some dialogue, about anything they want. It can be funny, serious, political, sad, historical, whatever, as long as it involves the two foreigners dressed as tiger and bear.

We are still open to more artist joining the project; how the illustrators choose to portray the story and the two characters is completely free, as we would really love to have a range of different styles here and most importantly a range of different takes on the two characters.

What we then plan to do with the finished products is to feature them in online and print media such as Daegu Pockets, which is a community based magazine, in Daegu, South Korea (pretty obvious eh?). The comic strips will appear each month in both online and print versions of the magazine and we also have contacts with other media outlets, such as newspapers and popular blogs, who have expressed interest in running the strips.

Eventually we plan on publishing compendium of the comics and putting on a couple of art shows, probably in Daegu and Seoul galleries.

There will be no financial compensation at this point, primarily because we're not making any money from this, but credit will of course be given. It will also present an exceptional networking opportunity.

'U·S·B: Emerging Korean Artists in the World 2009' is the contemporary art exhibition which features a collective of 24 new generation of the Korean diaspora artists, who were either born in the 70s or 80s, and based outside Korea: Europe, the Americas and across Asia, working actively within the international art scene but not being exposed to the public in Korea.

The title of the exhibition, 'U·S·B' is a metaphor for connectivity and mobility of these artists who live or travel around the globalized world with changing boarders, merging cultures, the new channels of communication, the growing power of social networks and media, and emerging technologies for ecosystem. Not only the social and cultural environment in which each artist resides, but their proximities to Korea are different: some of the artists were born and grew up in Korea before leaving the country; the others have never or hardly lived in Korea while being a Korean national. The exhibition provides an opportunity to look into their various artistic languages, sensitivities and interests cultivated and transformed through negotiations with diverse social systems, political power and cultural values.

The exhibition gathers more than 100 new and existing works of the artists, of which media encompass painting, video, installation, animation, photography and sculpture. By bringing together their articulations and perspectives, this exhibition aims to portrait not only how travelling and living in between cultures influences the constitution of self, but also the state of negotiation and complexity within a subject, which cannot be embraced by a single national identity.

Like the junior high kissing game, but with people playing music
instead of making out - though smooching will not be prohibited.

Everyone will sit in a circle and spin the bottle. Whoever the bottle
lands on, that will be who you will jam with for the next 5 minutes.
Just pick up an instrument and go for it! It could be terrible or it
could be awesome.

Yogiga will provide many different kinds of instruments: guitars,
drums, accordion, out of tune piano, PA, amps, various others; but
people are encouraged to bring their own instruments to add to the
diversity.

This show will be recorded and the best of the jams will be released
on either cassette tape or cd-r. Participants will receive a free
copy.

This is not an opportunity to find some people to jam on that folk-pop
song you have been working on. This is purely for improvisation and
spontaneity. Everyone is urged to play an instrument with which they
are uncomfortable or unfamiliar and see what new sounds they can
create.

This will not be a reoccurring event, so don't be shy and come on down
to Yogiga Gallery.

There will be booze at this.

From mid-October, Root Experience will start a Performers Playground every Wednesday evening in Seoul from 21 Oct to 11 Nov. After that, from 17 Nov to Xmas, they will be held on Tuesday evenings. This will be a weekly workshop for people simply wishing to play with differing styles of performance and theatricality. The idea is to explore different theatrical ideas, and create a shared environment where creativity can thrive.
Each week we will look at something different, from rhythm in performance to exploring ways to enhance relationships with audience and techniques inspired by our good old improvisation friend.
These workshops are open to anyone with any level of experience, just drop in! You don't need to make any commitment, just turn up to once, or keep coming along.
The Performers Playground will initially be run by members of the company, but will then be open to anyone who wants to try out their own ideas.

Background:
컬mont Family is a family of friends and an international group of artists living and working in Korea. They originally formed within the abandoned neighborhood of Guemho in Seoul where they spent their summer weekends exploring, sharing, and making art.

Cadavre Exquis is French for "exquisite corpse" and originates from a Surrealist game in which players take turns writing or drawing on a piece of paper. Each player conceals their work with a fold, revealing only a tiny portion until the page is complete.
For this group project, they embrace the game's historical and literal associations, replace the conceptual element of concealment with interdisciplinary collaboration, and expand the material from simple paper to the space of the city and of their friendships. All the works for this exhibition are new projects developed between the artists involved.
The 컬mont Family takes specific interest in the Baedari area because of its strong sense of community and its current struggle against rapid redevelopment.

Space빔 (Beam) is an alternative art space located in an old rice wine brewery building on Baedari Road in Incheon, Korea. Many people call Baedari the "Mother of Incheon" since Incheon's modern history, culture, education, religion, labor, and even transportation started there. Space빔 is trying to establish the unique identity of local culture as an alternative art space under the motto of publicity, locality, and autonomy. It intervenes in the course of production, circulation, and consumption of discourse on local art and sets the stage for open meetings and productive communications while struggling with the centralized culture & arts system.

Seoul Jazz Festival will be held for the first time at the Gwanak-gu Science Exhibition Hall and Nakseongdae Park.
The Seoul Jazz Festival will be held for three days from Oct. 9 through Oct. 11. The festival featuring amateur and professional jazz musicians will offer an unforgettable experience.

Seong Si-gyeong and the military band will perform along with jazz harmonica player Jeon Je-deok, and Korean jazz singers Woongsan and Malo. From abroad will come lyrical jazz pianist Ron Branton, saxophone player Grace Kelly and jazz saxophone player James Moody. Contemporary art talks about democracy. The present situation and inborn significance of democracy presents the alternative to autonomy and social function of art.

'NOW WHAT_Democracy and Contemporary Art' is a question about how democracy relates to contemporary art.

This question starts from the critical mind on restrictions originated by various causes in reality, such as consequences of mass media, school education, authoritarian at workplace, lack of passage for democratic participation, and political measures of government. The reality of democracy in Korea is that the people haven’t yet obtained civic rights, and even a notion of the citizen is absent.

At a contemporary art exhibition hall, as a specifically political space that displays art, intends to present rather concrete features to this dim and abstract notion of the status and role of the citizen through contemporary art pieces that comprehend alternative for democracy and criticism on reality. This exhibition is a fundamental question about the cause of extreme social changes, as well as an ontological question about our standings. We would like to exchange alternative plans and prepare for future through this question.

About The Artists

Seokho Kang graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany. He had his first solo exhibition at do ART Gallery in 2003, also held solo exhibitions at Kumho Museum in 2006 and at Brain Factory in 2008. He takes individual characters as his main motif and takes them into his paintings in different ways; the paintings of a trimmed bust of people shown in TV programs or newsmagazines, for example. In this case, gesture becomes the key of the painting since each character makes particular gesture in a very rhetorical and descriptive impression exaggeratively expresses the social or political standing of oneself. The artist also projects exhibitions with his series of collections made up of ordinary living supplies such as chairs.

Minja Gu graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University and Department of Figurative Art at Korean National University of Arts. She participated in Ssamzie Studio Program in Korea and Hangar Residency Program in Barcelona. She also took part in several group exhibitions such as , and , and had her first solo exhibition at Space Croft in 2009.

Baruch Gottlieb is a media and sound artist born in Montreal, Canada who took his major in film production. He is the originator for bringing in sound art in Korean curriculum as well as founding Sound Effects Seouls(SFX Seoul). From 2005 to 2008 he stayed in Korea working as an assistant professor in media art at Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication and Arts. Mainly presenting sound and computer-based films, his work even expands to interactive art, radio art, archiving and public art, pursuing systems of human form in the cosmism of human nature.

Pash Buzari is an artist mainly presenting video and installation works mixed with photography and drawing, with his interests based on architectural or cinematic space. The artist is also interested in aspects such as light, space and perception shown in sci-fi films, he experiments alternative possibilities about “future” and investigates models of future life in the boundary of architecture and society. In those works film, design or architecture becomes a tool to look out on future. Buzari participated in the Berlin Biennial in 2001, Venice Biennial in 2003 and Whitney Biennial in 2006.

Hwayoung Park, born in Seoul in 1968, graduated from Department of Painting at Seoul National University and got her master degree in New Form at Pratt Institute. She participated in P.S.1 International Studio Program held by Institute for Contemporary Art, New York in 1995, and took part in Theaterwork DESDEMONA held in Germany and Japan in 2000 and 2001. In 1998 she co-projected the very first single video exhibition in Korea and presented it at Art Sonje Center. Merging together varying media and scales, she has been showing her works in diverse forms, searching for the most appropriate ways to express identities, the essential topic. Her works metaphorically represent things she actually feels and experiences in her everyday life.

Pascal Lièvre was born in France in 1963. He has constantly been having exhibitions around the world : Paintings Ombres in Belgium(2000), Vidéochroniques in France(2001), VideoHisboa Festival in Portugal(2003), “Face Off” in New York(2004), Preview Art Fair in Germany(2005) and “Women Portraits” in Hong Kong(2005). The artist re-appropriates himself icons of pop culture and mixes them to create new political language, scrapping out famous art works from their structure and background in his paintings.

Justine Triet, born in France in 1978, graduated from National Art School in Paris, and worked as a director, screenwriter, actress, photographer, editor and sound editor. She presented a short film “Sur place” in 2006 with the scenario, sound editing and production on her own, and in 2007’s film “Chroniques de 2005” she played a role as an actress.

Sungmin Hong, Professor of Kaywon School of Art and Design, inspires a new wave into the art and performance field in Korea with his projects turning a shopping mall into a performance stage, or presenting a lip-synch opera performance played by well-known characters of TV commercials. His general-oriented works stand on a unique, inflecting line in the Korean contemporary art society. The artist presents the new aesthetics the modern society desires, deranging symmetrical aspects like Eastern & Western, ordinary & extraordinary or tradition & revolution. His site-specific projects filled with various devices like dance, performance, live music and images run by a nonlinear scenario subvert traditional structure of a theatre.

Chulki Hong is a noise musician and improvisation player born in Seoul in 1976. In 1997 he formed Astronoise, which was the first group in Korea that plays noise music. In 2000s he produced several albums of noise music and improvisation music, while co-managing an independent label Balloon and Needle. He also played with other improvisation musicians from in and out of the country several times, and wrote music for experimental films.

Peter Watkins is an English film director born in 1935. After studying at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art he started making films with an 8mm camera, and in 1959 his film “The Diary of Unknown Soldier” won Oscar Prize for Amateur. Then he started his career as an assistant producer of TV films and commercials at BBC, but since the film “The War Game” he presented in 1965 was banned by BBC Watkins left England. From then on Watkins consistently produced films that criticize the brutality of war and reveal his hostility towards public power and the press. “Punishment Park”, “Edvard Munch” and “The Freethinker” are the well-known works by Watkins, especially “La Commune” filmed in 2000 is valued as the zenith of his works with all his standpoints integrated. He is named as the initiator of fake documentary, or mockumentary in other words.

Raqs Media Collective is a group of three media artists Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta, with their activities based in New Delhi. They all graduated from the Mass Communication Research Center at Jamis Milia Islamia University, India, and gathers in 1992. The three members were also co-curators of Manifesta 7, The European Biennail of Contemporary Art took place in Italy in 2008. Raqs had their exhibitions at Frankfurt and New York in 2004. Their work continues to explore and develop in subsequence the urban landscape and experience, the meaning and uses of media and technology, the nature of knowledge and what it means to learn. We face not only an artistic impulse but also a wider range of human faculty associated with the capacity of individuals and societies for imaginative and ethical innovation.

KIAF, a project organized by the Gallery Association of Korea and inaugurated in 2002, has earned a reputation as one of the most prominent and exciting art fair destinations through out its seven successful years.

The new century has witnessed the rapid change of our cultural environment ensued by the transformation of the art world. International biennials and artist residencies, especially those held in growing metropolitan areas on the Asian continent and other regions once categorized as the third world, have remapped the relationships of the international art world. They have emerged as powerful vehicles of change and transformation. Today's artist residencies, by performing diverse functions that overlap with those of creative studios, alternative spaces, and art centers, influence the ways in which artists from different art world systems, communities, and geographic locations collaborate and communicate with each other. Thus, the success of artist residencies increasingly relies on the degree and effectiveness of their interactions with “others”--other institutions, other regions.

This conference, “The 21st Century Art Residency and New Institutional Collaborations,” will provide an opportunity to investigate the possibilities that arise when artist residencies, museums, and other institutions collaborate. It will provide a forum to consider the many benefits, both logistical and conceptual, of establishing these various partnerships.

On the occasion of the opening of the Gyeonggi Creation Center, established in collaboration with the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, we will be hosting Res Artis, the worldwide network of artist residencies, in creatively engaging these issues. All who are interested are welcome to attend and contribute their perspectives to this timely conversation.

This time, Fan Yang directs from behind the scenes, and his elder brother, Jano Yang, and his son, Deni Yang, appear in turn to present an 80-minute, fun-packed bubble extravaganza, which features super-large wind fans, snow machines, and laser beams.

At the center of the lobby and at the entrance to the out-door performance hall are the “Bubble Experience Zones”, where the audience can make bubbles themselves using tools invented by Fan Yang. At the “Bubble Gallery Zones”, people can see the photos of Fan Yang setting Guinness World Records and other photos that show the beauty of bubble art.

Introduction
The Jarasum (Jaraseom) International Jazz Festival marks its 6th anniversary this year. It began in 2004 with 30 teams of jazz artists from 12 countries including the US and Japan. Well established as a significant international festival, this festival draws at least 100,000 visitors every year to Jaraseom Island, Gapyeong-Eup, Gyeonggi-do. This year, the jazz festival will from October 2nd to the 5th. Despite being a relatively young festival, the Jarasum (Jaraseom) International Jazz Festival has earned its rank among major international festivals with both a line-up and an audience that is growing larger with each passing year. The island's natural beauty blends together harmoniously with the performances and leaves many wanting to return.

There are several free performances, but concert goers are encouraged to pick up a day pass for 25,000 won to gain admittance to all performances, leports events, exhibitions and events.

All concerts are free with the exclusion of Jazz Island, Party Gym, Jazz Club, and Jazz Center.

The purpose of the Korea Experimental Arts Festival is to build a communication between audiences and experimental arts. This festival has happened every year since 2002 under the art direction of Kim Baek Ki who is performance artist and chief of KoPAS (Korea Performance Art Spirit). This is the biggest experimental art festival in Korea.

The KEAF brings together over 100 artists from 15 countries such as Japan, Korea, Estonia, Sweden, Australia, USA, Africa.

Friday Sept 11 - 7pm- 9pm - Theater Zero (Near Children's Park)- Penny Thompson presents "Spirality" - interactive spiral walk with lights , plus many other performances. Cost 20,000 won for 2 hour show.

Saturday Sept 12 - 2 – 3:30 pm / on the top of Seokyo Art Center. Penny Thompson presents "Bubble Bubble" - a fun interactive performance blowing hundreds of bubbles over the rooftops of Seoul. Will be filmed by Arirang TV. Cost: free.

Sunday Sept 13 in Club O-Baek (500) (Sangsu Station side of Hongdae) - starts at 9.30pm - our performance 10.30pm - Circular Sound Circus team presents "K-CHAK! Indonesian-based vocal percussion". Under the theme “Void of Memory,” Platform in KIMUSA of Platform 2009 is an exhibition that rediscovers the spaces that have been unused or forgotten for a period of time. Kimusa, the old site of the Defense Security Command (DSC) in Sogyeok-dong, is a meaningful place historically, architecturally, and culturally, because it has undergone several transformations up until today. The exhibition introduces diverse voices from both the mainstream and non-mainstream art worlds, and provides a vision for new institutions. These voices, after all, are the tools that open up the possibility of communication between the members of different communities in the city. Therefore, Platform in KIMUSA is an experimental ground on which critical and alternative discussions on “New Institutionalism” can be held through exhibitions and events. Platform in KIMUSA is comprised of diverse exhibition sections, events and lectures. There are four main sections: P1 is the main exhibition; P2 presents artists recommended by other artists; P3 features a series of projects curated by institutions; and P4 shows the visions of international art institutions. Public Programs and special events are also held throughout the project. Platform in KIMUSA, composed of the various sections above, explores new roles of art by focusing on diverse aspects of art that have been excluded or neglected from contemporary art discourses as well as unrecognized visions and voices of the art world.

Artist Kang, Seung-Hee’s Solo Exhibition, , will open on August 27, 2009 and close on September 6th at the Insa Art Space of Arts Council Korea. Kang’s exhibition has been selected and designed on the occasion of 2009 Insa Art Space Exhibition Support Project and is the second show of the project. This project was designed to expand the creation field of the arts scene by providing an opportunity of production to original and experimental young artists. Kang Seung-Hee, who has shown talent through her power of expression and the use of various media, explores the duality of cultures in this exhibition. She embodies the story of ‘different sames’ in her works through comical images and the familiar movement of her hands, which produced her digital prints and embroidery drawings.

Kang has been working with continuous interest in the heterogeneity and clashes of diverse cultures. As an exhibition which extends Kang’s working field from England to Seoul, it takes form of a homecoming report and the artist attempts to show through the performances and workshops that multiple cultural perspectives exist. The culture shocks that she experienced and the clashing of big and small desires are expressed as comical images and performances. The criticizing gestures of the artist that appear in these works are inverted from “cute resistances” to naughty pleasures. Furthermore, the artist’s experiences remembered by the body are expressed through transformation into multimedia drawings or embroidery. Despite the fact that Kang deals with international issues, social discrepancies or absurdity in her works, the images that appear are expressed as “comic drawings” (according to the artist), thus bringing those issues into the funs of everyday life and solving what may be problematic.

An Invitation to Exhibit at Space Beam, Incheon:

From Oct 6th to the 26th at Space Beam, The 칼mont Family art group is planning an exhibition that exposes native and foreign artists interacting within the city of Incheon. Our show is called Cadavre Exquis, or “exquisite corpse.” A cadavre exquis is a Surrealist technique by which a collection of pictures or words is collaboratively assembled creating a single image or story. Originating in France, cadavre exquis can be described by the following quote by Pierre Reverdy in 1918:

The image is a pure creation of the mind. It cannot be born from a comparison but from a juxtaposition of two more or less distant realities. The more the relationship between the two juxtaposed realities is distant and true, the stronger the image will be -- the greater its emotional power and poetic reality.

This concept resonates with our varied cultural and national backgrounds, but also due to a shared interest in liminal spaces and making work together. We are in continual development and we are open to collaborating and sharing ideas, beliefs, and each other. We are accepting works of all mediums which have been developed through active collaborations between two or more artists. Art Supply Stores in Seoul - a list in the making

This is the beginning of a list of art stores in Seoul.

1. Hongik University Art Supply Store:

One of the biggest and best I know is the Hongik University Art store which is on the ground floor of the fancy new front gateway building at the front of the campus, (R building). You go in through the R Building front door and walk straight, right to the back, into the art store.
Opening hours: 7 days a week. 9am - 10pm weekdays, and til 8 pm on weekends. Prices are reasonable because they cater to students.

Carries: Everything! (from stationery to canvas, architectural model materials, paints, mediums, brushes, clay, plaster, print making supplies, Hanji paper, technical design materials, craft supplies, computer accessories, video tapes etc.)

There are other art stores in Hongdae but the Hongik University one is big, modern, well-laid out, carries a huge range of stock, has some staff who speak English if you need help, and is easy to find.

Public transport: Hongik University front gate is a 10 minute walk from either Line 6 Sangsu station, or Line 2 Hongik University Station.

2. HOMI art store
Another large art supply store that is famous in Hongdae but notoriously hard to find!
It is located behind the Seokyo Hotel district in the little old back street that runs parallel to the main Hongdae parking street. The store front is very small and non-descript. But there is a kind of gold statue on a pole near the front door. See map for directions.
Carries: Everything!
Opening hours: 7 days a week. open til late maybe 10pm weekdays.

Public transport: HOMI art store is a 7 minute walk from either Line 2 or 6 Hapjeong station - exit 3, or Line 2 Hongik University Station, exit 5.

Prada Transformer - Art Exhibition -opening Aug 15 - Sept 13, 2009

For the third cycle of transformation of the Prada Transformer in Seoul, the Prada foundation will hold an exhibition of Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg entitled 'turn into me' from August 15 to September 13 in the rotating building designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA next to the sixteenth-century Gyeonghui palace in Seoul.

In the interior of the Transformer, now covered with a surface of white felt that ripples and twists to form a highly baroque, sensual wrapping, the artist has created an installation that she articulates over the floors and walls through the use of objects and projections that mute the whiteness and transform the architectural environment into a cave of the
unconscious and oneiric.

In this shadowy, disturbing envelope, whose cruciform
configuration follows the hexagonal shape used for fashion and the rectangular one
used for cinema, the only thing that visually stands apart is the floor, which is covered
in a grey felt on which objects great and small are placed and lighted in a spectacular mode.

These assume the likenesses of a potato, a dolmen and two small whales—some of them
already exhibited in 2008 at the Fondazione Prada in Milan —with animated videos inserted
as part of the whole. In order, moreover, to emphasize the nature of the interior space
of the Transformer, the artist has chosen to project, at maximum size, two other videos
which, in a symbiotic interaction with the white, almost flesh-like covering of the inside
environment, expand the disturbing landscape of her vision.

Djurberg's works are characterized by an obsessive rhythm, and while they are permeated with
a taste for irony and humor, they convey a sense of disquietude, nostalgia, and unease, sometimes
genuine anguish. These feelings are reinforced by the music that accompanies all artist's works,
written by the young Swedish composer Hans Berg.

Nathalie Djurberg lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

“Wood Meets Paper” Exhibit at SOMA, Seoul Thru Aug 30

Description:
With strips of wooden swirls and paper-covered hoops, New York-based artists Mary Sullivan and Boris Curatolo offer up an exhibit called “Wood Meets Paper” at the SOMA Museum of Art near Olympic Park in southern Seoul, running through August 30.
This is the third collaborative installation by these two artists, after a previous joint effort in Spain last year. According to the artists, their installations are designed specifically for the constraints and atmosphere of the exhibit space.

Ticket prices are W3,000 for adults; W2,000 for students.

Descritption:
The “3rd Chungmuro International Film Festival in Seoul 2009” (CHIFFS 2009) will run from the 24th August until the 1st September, in Chungmuro, one of the centers of Korea's film industry. This year the theme is “Yesterday, Now & Forever”, and more than 210 films from 40 countries will be screened in the 16 different categories of the festival, which include the CINE-CLASSIC, CINE RETRO Ⅲ, and Viva! Latin Cinema categories.

The CINE-CLASSIC category will feature award-winning films from international film festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In the CINE RETRO Ⅲ category, classics starring Marilyn Monroe will be screened, and the Viva! Latin Cinema will present Latin American films.

The opening ceremony will be held at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. During the festival, movies will be screened in various movie theaters throughout Seoul such as Daehan Cinema, Joongang Cinema, CGV Myeongdong, and Megabox Dongdaemun. Also, some movies will be screened free of charge at open-air cinemas, and during the festival an open-air cinema will be set up in Seoul Plaza. Tickets for screenings cost 5,000won.

Description:
In front of Hong-Ik University, the place, usually called 'HONG-DAE', is the place of origin of Korean Independent Arts. It's also where underground culture or non-mainstream groups started their performance. Until today, it is known to be a distinguished place where people are allowed to express themselves as much as they want more than other places.

As befits its fame as the center for independent art, throughout August, everywhere in Hongdae will be the venue for the 12th Seoul Fringe Festival; a home to non-mainstream arts.

Fringe Festival is opened to every artist from an amateur to a professional unlike a usual art fair that sort art pieces out based on a specific criterion for an entry. It is also distinguishing character of Fringe Festival that participants work on their own art program individually but operate overall festival together.
This festival is for giving positive environment to breathe freshness into the art industry. In reality and in name, Seoul Fringe Festival can be translated into "an alternative culture festival" where we can see the creative imagination and experimental sprit of many various artists.

The history of the Seoul Fringe Festival can trace back to 1998. At the time, 'Independent Art Fair' was held for the first time under the name of 'Seeking out Korean Style Fringe', and on its 5th anniversary in 2002, it extended its scope to an international art event from a domestic one. Today, the Seoul Fringe Festival is the oldest event of these kinds in Asia, followed by Bangkok Fringe Festival in Thailand since 1999.

This year almost 300 participants including individuals and groups are taking part in this festival . Thanks to large number of artists, a lot of unique events will be displayed or played over 17 days. (Up to 165 programs will be played 359 times overall)

The festival largely consists of Indoor Art Fair, Street (Outdoor) Art Fair, Special Program, and Delivery Program. You can meet all sorts of art such as play, dance, music, performance, and mixed-art etc. All programs are ready to get joined with citizens. (The style or theme of each program is too various that we decide not to introduce any of them.)

Maybe, people are not familiar with the Independent Art. But this time, it's not necessary for you to feel uncomfortable because of its various styles. We recommend you to go to Hongdae without any hesitation in the evening of summer day when the sunset is glowing. Without limitation of the time and space, you can come across some surprisingly wonderful art pieces that stimulate your intrinsic creativity.

The innovative artwork of Scandinavian nations - Kukje Gallery, Seoul til Aug 23, 2009

To the masses, Nordic countries are known for their long winters, white nights and, of course, those pillaging Vikings of old.

To the art world, they’re known for their innovative ideas.

Some of the best contemporary Nordic art is now on display at the Kukje Gallery in downtown Seoul, providing a glimpse into a style that is somewhat foreign to most Koreans.

The exhibit features works from six contemporary Scandinavian artists: Kaspar Bonnen and Michael Elmgreen of Denmark, Ingar Dragset and Ann Lislegaard of Norway, Per Wizen of Sweden, and Marko Vuokola of Finland.

Bonnen, a prominent young painter is known for “combining aspects of modernist formalism with narrative and almost theatrical modes,” said curator Pontus Kyander, the public arts manager in Auckland, New Zealand, who organized the event. A Bonnen work on display titled “You’re the Speaker” gives viewers the sense that they are being interviewed by the people in the painting. The artist’s style creates a kind of chaos that leaves some viewers a bit disturbed, yet it also challenges their perceptions.

Elmgreen and Dragset are actually a married couple. They humorously deconstruct artistic spaces and present absurd and poetical themes.

The two have collaborated on projects for the Tate Modern museum in London and numerous international art events. Elmgreen and Dragset are currently curators and participating artists in the Nordic and Danish pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

The Kukje exhibit includes a video recording of their art performance “Drama Queens,” which features imitations of sculptures by Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore. The sculptures , powered by electric motors, move around the stage as if they are in an actual play, debating which one is the best work.

Wizen has received increasing attention recently from institutions and collectors. The Swede’s works are essentially recreations of old paintings, which he makes by assembling book reproductions of the pieces into collages. These projects are so complicated that they sometimes take years to finish. His works have little relation to the historical context of the paintings. Instead, he presents troubling imagery based on the styles of artists like Uccello, Masaccio and Caravaggio.

Marko Vuokola has experimented with variations in time and space in his “Seventh Wave” series. The most recent addition involves the landscape around Marfa, Texas, where he took pictures of objects at different time intervals. Lastly, Lislegaard has caught international attention through her sophisticated sound and video installations.

What: “Bert Stern’s Marilyn Monroe ‘The Last Sitting.’”

Marilyn Monroe is undoubtedly one of America’s most iconic figures. This exhibit displays a series of photographs taken by American fashion photographer Bert Stern for Vogue magazine.

Stern snapped the photos at the Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angeles six weeks prior to Monroe’s death.Of the 2,571 images Stern captured, 59 will be displayed here.

This will be the first time the exhibit is shown in Asia.
It was originally presented in 2006 at the Musee Maillol in Paris. The exhibition in Seoul, which is open until October 4, will also feature a montage of clips from Monroe's movies.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In August, small cities full of excitement and fun will be created in Incheon. Global Fair & Festival 2009 Incheon, Korea will run from August 7th to October 25th in Incheon’s Songdo International City. Its slogan is “Lightening Tomorrow”. It is the first international festival held with “cities” as its theme.

All of the major venues are themed as small cites where visitors can have tons of fun. In the event areas, visitors can watch exhibitions, enjoy some food and relax. The major exhibitions include the Robot Science Future Pavilion, the Advanced Technology Plaza, the Green Growth Hall, the Teddy Bear exhibition, the World Culture Street, the Global City Pavilion and the Domestic and Overseas Business Mall. This exhibition features various interpretation of 'monsters', imaginative and mysterious creatures created by distinguished artists through the eyes of comtemporary art.

Monsters have been perennially living in the imagination of numerous artists. They are a metaphor to embody a dualism crossed all society like cognitive dissonance in individual values collided with the real world, refusal and violation against existing system and rationality and internal discord in human being or community. One of the hidden code to understand complicated and multiplicate comtemporary art radically changing is 'dissonance' which appears as 'monsters' in the comtemporary world. Twenty one artists in the exhibition provide common denominator, imaginary creatures through 'Dissonant Visions'.
The word 'Monster' can be traced back to the latin 'monstrare (teach)' and 'monere (warn)'. As you can see, monsters originally meant something to show to the public as a warning like psychological and moral deviation including immorality, madness, irrationality and violation rather than something to inspire fears or disgust until before 19th century. They are not natural creatures, but cultural and artistic creatures representing a stranger of the age in the historical context. As it becomes hard to draw a line between goodness and badness, the emblematic creatures earned additional images of chaotic human who lost their control over the world.

Catastrophic reality and unpredictable future make human beings unstable more and more. In this 'hybrid' world, existing rational orders and values are confusing people. Various illustration of monsters in contemporary art offers meaningful opportunities to have a deeper understanding into inhuman wildness inside us living today.

Introduction and Artists

The exhibition presents various interpretation against existing stereotype of monsters, helps the audience broaden their horizon of imagination, and looks into the contemporary world through multiple aspects. 21 participating artists show diverse works like paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos and installations diversified both in form and substance at three sections.

Section 1. Apocalypse of Dystopia

This section consists of series of works expressing monsters as a rhetoric symbolizing an dystopian response to the dismal age. They contain complaints and desperate horrors about the world's irregularities and evil practices, concerns and pessimism about the civilized society, inhuman wildness beneath it, and uncertainty of the future caused by radical changes of cutting edge scientific technology.

Section 2. Forbidden Land

This section is about monsters as an existence that refuses traditional values and violates taboos. As Michel Foucault defined monsters as a combination of impossibilities and taboos, beings that violate taboos are monstrous. Those who crossed a boundary or on the line are monsters. Present time is a 'hybrid' world that caused number of problems like violating the nature, creation of mixed species and collapsed characteristics and boundaries then monsters unveil their appearance agitating existing reasonable orders and values.

Section 3. Inner Monster

This section deals with internal darkness and madness of human being. Art is an aesthetic expression of the age and recognition of the reality by the artist and moreover, it is a report about immanent nature of human. Monster is embodiment of fear existing beneath the deepest consciousness, another ego of the artist and psychological portrait of us all. We may be able to reaffirm the monstrous characteristics inside of us.

For the entire month of August, Incheon is the site for a unique contemporary art biennale that shines the spotlight on women artists. Nearly 300 artists from 40 countries are participating in the second Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (IWAB), which opens Saturday.

It is only timely and relevant to have a contemporary art biennale focusing on women artists. The international art world has always been criticized for being sexist and male-dominated, and Korea is no exception.

Yang Eun-hee, commissioner of the Main Exhibition at the biennale, said there is a big disparity between the number of male and female artists shown in art institutions and museums in Korea.

``In the Korean art world, the museums' major collections have less than 20 percent, or even 10 percent, of artworks by female artists,'' Yang told The Korea Times. ``I also did some research at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwacheon. For their new acquisitions in 2007, only 11 percent were women artists. It's very low.''

Even major contemporary art biennales around the world are traditionally seen as male-dominated events. This is one of the reasons that spurred the creation of the Incheon Women Artists Biennale.

``Other biennales in the world tend to be led by male artists. Our uniqueness is we focus on women artists and their works. It's a challenge for us. We want to overcome the male dominated art world, and that's one of the reasons why we created the biennale,'' said Kwon Kyung-ae, president of the biennale organizing committee.

While the IWAB also invites male artists to participate, the biennale is focused on promoting women artists' works and acting as a bridge between the local and international art communities.

The biennale's roots can be traced to the Incheon Women Artists Association, which held annual exhibitions for its members since the 1980s. The first biennale opened in 2004, and its success led to its first-ever international version in 2007. It was established ``out of the belief that femininity could be a catalyst for communication between different genders which would bring about a more accelerated parity in an equally-beneficial society.''

Main Exhibitions

Since it is fairly new compared to the biennales in Gwangju and Busan, organizers admitted their budget is significantly smaller. ``Our budget is only 10 percent of the Gwangju Biennale's budget. We're definitely comparable to those biennales in terms of ideas, but not with the budget,'' Yang said.

This year's biennale is divided into three sections, each dealing with various issues confronting the art world, particularly women artists, today. The Main Exhibition and Participation Exhibition both feature only women artists, although the latter only includes Korean artists.

With the theme ``So Close Yet So Far Away,'' the Main Exhibition explores women artists' ``understanding and perception of space, where they reside, struggle and strive to realize their dreams.''

The Main Exhibition features works by 101 artists from 26 countries, including feminist artists Judy Chicago and Faith Ringgold. Chicago will be showing drawings of her controversial ``Dinner Party'' installation, which featured place settings for famous historical and mythical women like Sappho and Virginia Woolf.

``Somehow the biennale needs to be connected to the global audience and other feminist artists in the world. I think the goal of feminism is still being reached. … I would call this biennale as the first cooperative effort to build a sustainable institution in terms of women's art. To sustain this community in Korea, you need to build a network with the other areas,'' Yang said.

21st Century for Women

Women will lead the future. The title of the Tuning Exhibition says it all ``The 21st Century, The Feminine Century, and the Century of Diversity and Hope.''

Han Heng-gil, chairman of the operating committee of the exhibition, says the project envisions the 21st century as ``feminine, diverse and free of any political, racial or sexual oppression.''

``We are living in a time when there is no need to talk about improvement of women's status or equality. We are already there. Back in '60s and '70s, women perhaps struggled to gain independence and political and social power. During the past 40 years, that has shifted and Hillary Clinton came close to the U.S. presidency. The question now is not whether or not women's status has to be improved but the question is now that you are empowered, what are you going to do,'' Han told The Korea Times.

Both male and female artists will tackle these questions through their art. There are paintings, installations, multimedia pieces, animation, catalogs, text, films, performances and discussions, as well as ceramics and calligraphy, which are both often overlooked by the contemporary art scene.

Various performances will be staged on opening day, such as the hilarious critical satire by an all-female band of artists called DISBAND (1-5 p.m.) and Hong-kai Wang's ``Accept Me for What I Am If You Want Me'' (10-11 a.m.).

While it may seem counterproductive to invite male artists to a women artists' biennale, organizers believe that bringing together artists of both gender will produce a vibrant artistic dialogue.

New York-based artist Ma Jong-il, who created a huge bamboo installation at the Incheon Art Platform, says there should be no distinction between male and female artists.

``When we had a press meeting in New York, one of the artists said, `there are no female or male artists here.' Basically I don't care. Males and females, when they concentrate on developing their own way, eventually there is going to be harmony,'' he said.

Diverse Art on Display

The biennale art works will not just be seen at the main venue Incheon Art Platform, but also at historical landmarks like Incheon Korean-Chinese Cultural Center, Freedom Park, Incheon Weather Station, Incheon City Historical Data Office, Jemulpo Club, Incheon Educational and Cultural Center for Students, and the Paradise and Harbor Park Hotels.

``We are putting art in the public realm. We wanted to bring art to the daily life of people. As you know, Korean people don't care much about art, especially contemporary art. So if they don't come, you should go out to them and engage them,'' Han said.

One of the attention-grabbing works is New York-based artist Lee Chang-jin's indoor and outdoor mixed media installation ``Comfort Women Wanted.'' It references the thousands of young women forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

One billboard shows a photograph of a young Taiwanese comfort woman at the comfort station by a Japanese soldier, surrounded with gold leaf, usually used in honoring saints. It is flanked by two billboards showing just a silhouette of an old woman standing inside her house.

``Korea is where the `comfort women' movement started, and this Biennale is the perfect site to present an artwork which acknowledges these outspoken and courageous women survivors. By creating international awareness of these women and their place in history I hope we can prevent this kind of unspeakable crime against humanity ever happening again anywhere,'' Lee said.

Kim Eun-hyung, who is also based in New York, made a large-scale wall drawing ``Storyteller'' inside the Incheon Art Platform building. He gathered images from his everyday life, memories and pop culture to show how simple but bizarre life is.

Kim said his works delve into questions of personal identity, which can be expanded to male and female identity. ``The women artists' biennale is not only about feminism. I think for our part, we can show some harmony between man and woman. I want this to transcend sexuality, but be something that relates to human beings,'' Kim said.

Japanese artist ON Megumi Akiyoshi painted a colorful cloud of flowers on the glass facade of a building at the Incheon Art Platform. Aside from her painting, she will also wear a brightly colored costume for her ``ON Flower Gallery'' performance on Saturday.

Akiyoshi said she was intrigued when she first read about the IWAB, even though she's not crazy about the feminist movement.

``But I believe in yin and yang. Yin is female, yang is male. The relationship is always moving and changing. Like in Japan, right now only males can be emperors, but a long time ago, there was female emperor. So when I heard about this women's biennale, I thought yes, it is changing. I'm not trying to be more powerful than males, but it is just a natural movement. I'm very happy there's a women's biennale confidently talking about it, and I'm a part of it,'' she said.

Born 1932 in Medellin, Botero gained fame for his distinctive and vivid artworks portraying Latin American life, and is widely considered one of the living masters of modern art.
On display inside the museum are 89 paintings from Botero's personal collection. Three large bronze sculptures, "Cat," "Seated Woman," and "Reclining Woman" can be found around the Deoksu Palace grounds.

Divided into seven sections, the exhibition shows the diversity and depth of Botero's works throughout the decades, from still lifes to his latest "Circus" series.

Famous paintings by masters like Rubens, Velasquez, Cezanne, and Picasso are given a Botero-esque twist. Botero reinterpreted famous pieces like Goya's "Duchess of Osuna,'' Rubens' "Peter Rubens and Isabella Brandt,'' and Velasquez' "Infanta Margarita Teresa of Spain in White Dress.''

His works depicting Latin American people, culture and everyday life are dripping with affection and warmth. Many of the paintings are based on Botero's memories of growing up in Colombia, hence the scenes of families at home, dancing, bull fighting, and streets and landscapes with Spanish colonial era structures.

moderat is a collaboration of three successful projects that joined forces to create a new audiovisual experience. on the audio side modeselektor and apparat (hence the name, moderat) put a lot of efforts into developing a unique sound. they rented studio space at the legendary berlin hansa studios (where david bowie recorded 'heroes') in order to record the album in analog with the help of the studio's vintage tube technology and an old emi console from 1972, restored especially for moderat. they even hired joshua kit clayton, an american software designer, to program a superb reverb algorithm specifically for the recording process of the album. They also bought an emt model 140 plate reverb on an internet auction and had to travel to los angeles to pick it up. for the album they worked together with rapper busdriver from los angeles, delle (aka eased) from germany's top act seeed and paul st. hilaire.

on the visual side one of berlin's first and finest vj crews, pfadfinderei, provided some exclusive visual material. in contrary to their fast club-based fast paced style they created a whole new visual experience through decelerated images. moderat was one of the main acts on this year's sonar festival in barcelona and tour worldwide with their show.

Brad Betts and Josh Daniel's show at Gallery Sogool will explore ideas about the 'art museum'- what its purpose is, how and why the public interacts with it, and the motivations behind establishing and running an art institution.

They plan to create an installation throughout the entire gallery space, temporarily transforming it into an imaginary art museum called 'MoNAF' (Museum of National Arts Foundation). MoNAF will be presented to the public as a real museum, with 'ticketing facilities', an 'education centre' and different 'collections'. Yet these won't be exactly the same as what a visitor to a real art museum would find. Instead they'll reference the real thing, allowing the viewer to think about the experience of visiting an established, respected museum and how the museum creates that experience. The tone of the exhibition will be humorous, however everything in the installation will look and feel as if it is intended to be taken seriously. The artists aim to unsettle and intrigue the visitor, and make them question the motivation behind this, and other, museums.

The installation will be created through fitting out the gallery spaces with furniture and art objects that are made to look like objects normally found in an art museum, but are actually made of cardboard or other cheap and impermanent materials. On first glance these will look real, but on closer inspection they will be obviously fake, with the aim of both amusing and disconcerting the viewer.

Brad Betts and Josh Daniel are Australian artists, currently residing in Seoul. Brad studied sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts and animation at international college Animation Mentor. Josh majored in printmaking at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Monash University. They have both exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, with Josh curating and project managing an event for the 2006 Next Wave Festival, while Brad also works as a freelance 3D animator.

Contemporary Art of Latin America July 17 - August 8, KFCC, Seoul

The Korea Foundation Cultural Center is holding Borderless Generation: Contemporary Art of Latin America from July 17 through August 8.
Held as part of the "Latin American Cultural Festival," the exhibition will feature 27 artists from 16 countries and their artworks. It will be an occasion to explore the diversity of the Latin American contemporary arts. Gallery guide is scheduled to be held every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm during the exhibition period, and a special lecture will be given by the invited curator, Yoon Chea-gab, on July 17, Friday at 4pm. Film Festival "Flesh Mind and Spirit" - Prada Transformer Seoul til July 9

It's film festival time at Prada Transformer through July 9.
World-renowned film director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel") and former New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell have teamed up to select 14 films for the "Flesh Mind and Spirit" festival.
The films are an eclectic bunch chosen with no regard to era or nationality and include titles such as Alain Resnais' "Last Year at Marienbad" (1961), Karl Dreyer's "Ordet" (1955), Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (1972) and Charles Burnett's "Killer of Sheep" (1977), as well as the 2008 Korean blockbuster "The Good, The Bad, the Weird."
All films are filmed in their original language with English and Korean subtitles.

September 18 - November 4, 2009

Under the theme "The Clue", the Gwangju Design Biennale will open its 3rd edition on September 18th 2009 in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, South Korea. It is one of only a few design biennials in the world trying to create a tradition of thinking about design systematically.

The 3rd Gwangju Design Biennale sets out to reevaluate the truism "think globally and act locally" by examining five examples of traditional culture of Korea. These examples will be used to bring the potentialities of very specific local solutions to the fore and reconfigure them in an international design context: Perfect design is enacted in clothing, eating, living, enlightening and enjoying. Because these five human actions form the basis of a complete and harmonious life across all cultures, they are also themes in which designers, who want to improve that life, may search for clues. The extraordinary resources, objects and values upon which Korean culture thrives serve as a starting point for international designers and artists in their creation of new design concepts.

The five themes of 'Clothing', 'Eating', 'Living', 'Enlightening' and 'Enjoying' are expressed with the Korean words of '옷 [Ot]', '맛 [Mat]', '집Jip], '글 [Geul]' and '소리 [Sori]'. The curators of each theme exhibition try to pinpoint their relevance to specific culture and design. 'Clothing' is stratified into subjects: from the significance of traditional costume, to haute couture, to the garment as a work of art. Form uplifts function in 'Eating', where the symbolic color of food and the ceremonial table setting are reinterpreted. The organic spaces of the theme 'Living' offer elemental architectural inspiration. The themes 'Enlightening' and 'Enjoying' examine Korea's unprecedented specializations in the fields of graphic design and music. Each of the five themes will be filtered and interpreted through a set of responses by international artists and designers.

Three expanded projects cross section the five culturally located themes. 'Design to Save', 'Design to Care' and 'Design to Share,' proactively address major topics of global contemporary design such as sustainability, Universal Design and social engagement. Many of these projects utilize the citizens, economy and site of Gwangju with global enterprise. For Korea, the exhibition will be a venue in which to lay the groundwork for a new design culture, propelled, as the title suggests, by assets arising from the expanded meanings of traditional cultural manifestations.

The participating artists and designers of the Gwangju Design Biennale 2009 include among others German automobile designer Peter Schreyer, Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, Moshen Mostafavi, architect and Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, or Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk.

Artistic director is Byungsoo Eun. Eun launched the design brand of VIUM in the US, Korea and Japan in 2001; he performed as a guest designer at Maison de Objet of France in 2004 and he curated Asia Design, the main exhibition of the first Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005. Under his direction 15 curators are responsible for the seven different sections of the biennale.

The first edition of Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005 was titled "Light into Life". 707 designers from 33 countries presented their works. The main exhibition was centered on Asian Design and Future Life, it was accompanied by seven special exhibitions, international conferences, workshops, festivals and performances. A total of 280,000 visitors came to see the Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005.

"L.I.G.H.T." was the title of the second edition in 2007. The main exhibition had five sub-categories: Life, Identity, Green, Human and Technology. 927 designers from 45 countries exhibited their works. The Gwangju Design Biennale in 2007 had 250,000 visitors.

The Gwangju Biennale, which started in September 1995, was Asia's first contemporary art biennale. The first edition was visited by 1.6 million people. More than 500 artists and performers from 60 countries took part in the first edition. Ever since, each edition of the biennale has been visited by more than half a million viewers and the event has grown to become the most influential, respected biennial in Asia and one of the most prominent biennials in the world.

The 8th Gwangju Biennale takes place from September 5 until November 10, 2010. Artistic Director is Italian-born Massimiliano Gioni.

Korean Music Concert for foreigners- June 29, Namsan, Seoul

The Korea Foundation will host its "The Korea Foundation Concert for Foreigners 2009 --- Into the New Tradition" at the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang located in the Namsangol Hanok Village on Monday, June 29 at 7:30 pm.

The concert will feature an exciting performance by "Yeoul," a gayageum quartet playing various genres of music on the traditional Korean musical instrument gayageum, and "wHOOL," a percussion group creating music based on traditional Korean music which people of all ages and cultures can enjoy.

The two groups will perform together in the concert's finale to create beautiful melodies on traditional Korean musical instruments and harmony between traditional and modern, presenting the audience with an unforgettable summer night's entertainment. Hosted annually by the Korea Foundation since 2003 to help foreign residents in Korea understand Korean culture, the concert is free, but requires an advance reservation.
