- "Global Fair & Festival 2009 Incheon, Korea " Opens

In August, small cities full of excitement and fun will be created in Incheon. Global Fair & Festival 2009 Incheon, Korea will run from August 7th to October 25th in Incheon’s Songdo International City. Its slogan is “Lightening Tomorrow”. It is the first international festival held with “cities” as its theme.

All of the major venues are themed as small cites where visitors can have tons of fun. In the event areas, visitors can watch exhibitions, enjoy some food and relax. The major exhibitions include the Robot Science Future Pavilion, the Advanced Technology Plaza, the Green Growth Hall, the Teddy Bear exhibition, the World Culture Street, the Global City Pavilion and the Domestic and Overseas Business Mall. During the festival, visitors can experience what future cities will be like. Information on exhibitions, performances and events will be provided to suit the various needs of visitors. Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese language services will be available.

1. Theme Theater
Visitors can see the 3D animation called City Paradiso. This large-scale animation is created by advanced media technology. Also, a special show will feature holograms and a variety of performances including magic and pantomime.

Visitors can see many robot animals in the “Robot Zoo”. Also, there will be exciting exhibitions such as a world robot soccer match and robot battle.

The exhibition will feature how Incheon has developed as far as it has as a major city and its future vision. The 360-degree revolving center will be equipped with high technology facilities.

7. Tomorrow City
Visitors can experience firsthand future “lives” created by ubiquitous technology.

8. Green Growth Hall
The hall will feature a 3D ocean environment. Also, the exhibition highlights the importance of energy. The plant Jatropha, whose oil is getting a lot of attention as an alternative energy source, will be grown in a separate corner of the hall. Also, a hybrid street light and a solar block will be on display.

9. Incheon Bridge
From Incheon Bridge, which is a landmark of Incheon, people can enjoy fantastic shows including splendid fireworks, brilliant laser light shows and water screens.

10. Cirque Eloize’s New Show ID to Premiere in Korea
Canadian circus troupe Cirque Eloize's brand new show, ID, will premiere at the Global Fair & Festival 2009 Incheon, Korea. The art circus’s theme is “Speed, Spectacle, Special”. The troupe’s founder, Jeannot Painchaud directed the show.

Genre of exhibition and the number of artworks: Range of contemporary Art styles/ 60 pieces
This exhibition features various interpretation of 'monsters', imaginative and mysterious creatures created by distinguished artists through the eyes of comtemporary art.

Monsters have been perennially living in the imagination of numerous artists. They are a metaphor to embody a dualism crossed all society like cognitive dissonance in individual values collided with the real world, refusal and violation against existing system and rationality and internal discord in human being or community. One of the hidden code to understand complicated and multiplicate comtemporary art radically changing is 'dissonance' which appears as 'monsters' in the comtemporary world. Twenty one artists in the exhibition provide common denominator, imaginary creatures through 'Dissonant Visions'.
The word 'Monster' can be traced back to the latin 'monstrare (teach)' and 'monere (warn)'. As you can see, monsters originally meant something to show to the public as a warning like psychological and moral deviation including immorality, madness, irrationality and violation rather than something to inspire fears or disgust until before 19th century. They are not natural creatures, but cultural and artistic creatures representing a stranger of the age in the historical context. As it becomes hard to draw a line between goodness and badness, the emblematic creatures earned additional images of chaotic human who lost their control over the world.

Catastrophic reality and unpredictable future make human beings unstable more and more. In this 'hybrid' world, existing rational orders and values are confusing people. Various illustration of monsters in contemporary art offers meaningful opportunities to have a deeper understanding into inhuman wildness inside us living today.

Introduction and Artists

The exhibition presents various interpretation against existing stereotype of monsters, helps the audience broaden their horizon of imagination, and looks into the contemporary world through multiple aspects. 21 participating artists show diverse works like paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos and installations diversified both in form and substance at three sections.

Section 1. Apocalypse of Dystopia

This section consists of series of works expressing monsters as a rhetoric symbolizing an dystopian response to the dismal age. They contain complaints and desperate horrors about the world's irregularities and evil practices, concerns and pessimism about the civilized society, inhuman wildness beneath it, and uncertainty of the future caused by radical changes of cutting edge scientific technology.

Section 2. Forbidden Land

This section is about monsters as an existence that refuses traditional values and violates taboos. As Michel Foucault defined monsters as a combination of impossibilities and taboos, beings that violate taboos are monstrous. Those who crossed a boundary or on the line are monsters. Present time is a 'hybrid' world that caused number of problems like violating the nature, creation of mixed species and collapsed characteristics and boundaries then monsters unveil their appearance agitating existing reasonable orders and values.

Section 3. Inner Monster

This section deals with internal darkness and madness of human being. Art is an aesthetic expression of the age and recognition of the reality by the artist and moreover, it is a report about immanent nature of human. Monster is embodiment of fear existing beneath the deepest consciousness, another ego of the artist and psychological portrait of us all. We may be able to reaffirm the monstrous characteristics inside of us.

2009 Incheon Women Artist's Biennale - Aug 1 - 31, 2009

For the entire month of August, Incheon is the site for a unique contemporary art biennale that shines the spotlight on women artists. Nearly 300 artists from 40 countries are participating in the second Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (IWAB), which opens Saturday.

It is only timely and relevant to have a contemporary art biennale focusing on women artists. The international art world has always been criticized for being sexist and male-dominated, and Korea is no exception.

Yang Eun-hee, commissioner of the Main Exhibition at the biennale, said there is a big disparity between the number of male and female artists shown in art institutions and museums in Korea.

``In the Korean art world, the museums' major collections have less than 20 percent, or even 10 percent, of artworks by female artists,'' Yang told The Korea Times. ``I also did some research at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwacheon. For their new acquisitions in 2007, only 11 percent were women artists. It's very low.''



Even major contemporary art biennales around the world are traditionally seen as male-dominated events. This is one of the reasons that spurred the creation of the Incheon Women Artists Biennale.

``Other biennales in the world tend to be led by male artists. Our uniqueness is we focus on women artists and their works. It's a challenge for us. We want to overcome the male dominated art world, and that's one of the reasons why we created the biennale,'' said Kwon Kyung-ae, president of the biennale organizing committee.

While the IWAB also invites male artists to participate, the biennale is focused on promoting women artists' works and acting as a bridge between the local and international art communities.

The biennale's roots can be traced to the Incheon Women Artists Association, which held annual exhibitions for its members since the 1980s. The first biennale opened in 2004, and its success led to its first-ever international version in 2007. It was established ``out of the belief that femininity could be a catalyst for communication between different genders which would bring about a more accelerated parity in an equally-beneficial society.''


Main Exhibitions

Since it is fairly new compared to the biennales in Gwangju and Busan, organizers admitted their budget is significantly smaller. ``Our budget is only 10 percent of the Gwangju Biennale's budget. We're definitely comparable to those biennales in terms of ideas, but not with the budget,'' Yang said.

This year's biennale is divided into three sections, each dealing with various issues confronting the art world, particularly women artists, today. The Main Exhibition and Participation Exhibition both feature only women artists, although the latter only includes Korean artists.

With the theme ``So Close Yet So Far Away,'' the Main Exhibition explores women artists' ``understanding and perception of space, where they reside, struggle and strive to realize their dreams.''

The Main Exhibition features works by 101 artists from 26 countries, including feminist artists Judy Chicago and Faith Ringgold. Chicago will be showing drawings of her controversial ``Dinner Party'' installation, which featured place settings for famous historical and mythical women like Sappho and Virginia Woolf.

``Somehow the biennale needs to be connected to the global audience and other feminist artists in the world. I think the goal of feminism is still being reached. … I would call this biennale as the first cooperative effort to build a sustainable institution in terms of women's art. To sustain this community in Korea, you need to build a network with the other areas,'' Yang said.



21st Century for Women

Women will lead the future. The title of the Tuning Exhibition says it all ``The 21st Century, The Feminine Century, and the Century of Diversity and Hope.''

Han Heng-gil, chairman of the operating committee of the exhibition, says the project envisions the 21st century as ``feminine, diverse and free of any political, racial or sexual oppression.''

``We are living in a time when there is no need to talk about improvement of women's status or equality. We are already there. Back in '60s and '70s, women perhaps struggled to gain independence and political and social power. During the past 40 years, that has shifted and Hillary Clinton came close to the U.S. presidency. The question now is not whether or not women's status has to be improved but the question is now that you are empowered, what are you going to do,'' Han told The Korea Times.

Both male and female artists will tackle these questions through their art. There are paintings, installations, multimedia pieces, animation, catalogs, text, films, performances and discussions, as well as ceramics and calligraphy, which are both often overlooked by the contemporary art scene.

Various performances will be staged on opening day, such as the hilarious critical satire by an all-female band of artists called DISBAND (1-5 p.m.) and Hong-kai Wang's ``Accept Me for What I Am If You Want Me'' (10-11 a.m.).

While it may seem counterproductive to invite male artists to a women artists' biennale, organizers believe that bringing together artists of both gender will produce a vibrant artistic dialogue.

New York-based artist Ma Jong-il, who created a huge bamboo installation at the Incheon Art Platform, says there should be no distinction between male and female artists.

``When we had a press meeting in New York, one of the artists said, `there are no female or male artists here.' Basically I don't care. Males and females, when they concentrate on developing their own way, eventually there is going to be harmony,'' he said.

Diverse Art on Display

The biennale art works will not just be seen at the main venue Incheon Art Platform, but also at historical landmarks like Incheon Korean-Chinese Cultural Center, Freedom Park, Incheon Weather Station, Incheon City Historical Data Office, Jemulpo Club, Incheon Educational and Cultural Center for Students, and the Paradise and Harbor Park Hotels.

``We are putting art in the public realm. We wanted to bring art to the daily life of people. As you know, Korean people don't care much about art, especially contemporary art. So if they don't come, you should go out to them and engage them,'' Han said.

One of the attention-grabbing works is New York-based artist Lee Chang-jin's indoor and outdoor mixed media installation ``Comfort Women Wanted.'' It references the thousands of young women forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

One billboard shows a photograph of a young Taiwanese comfort woman at the comfort station by a Japanese soldier, surrounded with gold leaf, usually used in honoring saints. It is flanked by two billboards showing just a silhouette of an old woman standing inside her house.

``Korea is where the `comfort women' movement started, and this Biennale is the perfect site to present an artwork which acknowledges these outspoken and courageous women survivors. By creating international awareness of these women and their place in history I hope we can prevent this kind of unspeakable crime against humanity ever happening again anywhere,'' Lee said.

Kim Eun-hyung, who is also based in New York, made a large-scale wall drawing ``Storyteller'' inside the Incheon Art Platform building. He gathered images from his everyday life, memories and pop culture to show how simple but bizarre life is.

Kim said his works delve into questions of personal identity, which can be expanded to male and female identity. ``The women artists' biennale is not only about feminism. I think for our part, we can show some harmony between man and woman. I want this to transcend sexuality, but be something that relates to human beings,'' Kim said.

Japanese artist ON Megumi Akiyoshi painted a colorful cloud of flowers on the glass facade of a building at the Incheon Art Platform. Aside from her painting, she will also wear a brightly colored costume for her ``ON Flower Gallery'' performance on Saturday.

Akiyoshi said she was intrigued when she first read about the IWAB, even though she's not crazy about the feminist movement.

``But I believe in yin and yang. Yin is female, yang is male. The relationship is always moving and changing. Like in Japan, right now only males can be emperors, but a long time ago, there was female emperor. So when I heard about this women's biennale, I thought yes, it is changing. I'm not trying to be more powerful than males, but it is just a natural movement. I'm very happy there's a women's biennale confidently talking about it, and I'm a part of it,'' she said.

Fernando Botero exhibition - National Museum of Contemporary Art, Deoksu Palace, Seoul til Sept 17, 2009

What: Exhibition of Colombian artist Fernando Botero's paintings and sculptures

Born 1932 in Medellin, Botero gained fame for his distinctive and vivid artworks portraying Latin American life, and is widely considered one of the living masters of modern art.
On display inside the museum are 89 paintings from Botero's personal collection. Three large bronze sculptures, "Cat," "Seated Woman," and "Reclining Woman" can be found around the Deoksu Palace grounds.

Divided into seven sections, the exhibition shows the diversity and depth of Botero's works throughout the decades, from still lifes to his latest "Circus" series.

Famous paintings by masters like Rubens, Velasquez, Cezanne, and Picasso are given a Botero-esque twist. Botero reinterpreted famous pieces like Goya's "Duchess of Osuna,'' Rubens' "Peter Rubens and Isabella Brandt,'' and Velasquez' "Infanta Margarita Teresa of Spain in White Dress.''

His works depicting Latin American people, culture and everyday life are dripping with affection and warmth. Many of the paintings are based on Botero's memories of growing up in Colombia, hence the scenes of families at home, dancing, bull fighting, and streets and landscapes with Spanish colonial era structures.

moderat is a collaboration of three successful projects that joined forces to create a new audiovisual experience. on the audio side modeselektor and apparat (hence the name, moderat) put a lot of efforts into developing a unique sound. they rented studio space at the legendary berlin hansa studios (where david bowie recorded 'heroes') in order to record the album in analog with the help of the studio's vintage tube technology and an old emi console from 1972, restored especially for moderat. they even hired joshua kit clayton, an american software designer, to program a superb reverb algorithm specifically for the recording process of the album. They also bought an emt model 140 plate reverb on an internet auction and had to travel to los angeles to pick it up. for the album they worked together with rapper busdriver from los angeles, delle (aka eased) from germany's top act seeed and paul st. hilaire.

on the visual side one of berlin's first and finest vj crews, pfadfinderei, provided some exclusive visual material. in contrary to their fast club-based fast paced style they created a whole new visual experience through decelerated images. moderat was one of the main acts on this year's sonar festival in barcelona and tour worldwide with their show.

Brad Betts and Josh Daniel's show at Gallery Sogool will explore ideas about the 'art museum'- what its purpose is, how and why the public interacts with it, and the motivations behind establishing and running an art institution.

They plan to create an installation throughout the entire gallery space, temporarily transforming it into an imaginary art museum called 'MoNAF' (Museum of National Arts Foundation). MoNAF will be presented to the public as a real museum, with 'ticketing facilities', an 'education centre' and different 'collections'. Yet these won't be exactly the same as what a visitor to a real art museum would find. Instead they'll reference the real thing, allowing the viewer to think about the experience of visiting an established, respected museum and how the museum creates that experience. The tone of the exhibition will be humorous, however everything in the installation will look and feel as if it is intended to be taken seriously. The artists aim to unsettle and intrigue the visitor, and make them question the motivation behind this, and other, museums.

The installation will be created through fitting out the gallery spaces with furniture and art objects that are made to look like objects normally found in an art museum, but are actually made of cardboard or other cheap and impermanent materials. On first glance these will look real, but on closer inspection they will be obviously fake, with the aim of both amusing and disconcerting the viewer.

Brad Betts and Josh Daniel are Australian artists, currently residing in Seoul. Brad studied sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts and animation at international college Animation Mentor. Josh majored in printmaking at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Monash University. They have both exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, with Josh curating and project managing an event for the 2006 Next Wave Festival, while Brad also works as a freelance 3D animator.

Contemporary Art of Latin America July 17 - August 8, KFCC, Seoul

The Korea Foundation Cultural Center is holding Borderless Generation: Contemporary Art of Latin America from July 17 through August 8.
Held as part of the "Latin American Cultural Festival," the exhibition will feature 27 artists from 16 countries and their artworks. It will be an occasion to explore the diversity of the Latin American contemporary arts. Gallery guide is scheduled to be held every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm during the exhibition period, and a special lecture will be given by the invited curator, Yoon Chea-gab, on July 17, Friday at 4pm. Film Festival "Flesh Mind and Spirit" - Prada Transformer Seoul til July 9

World-renowned film director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel") and former New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell have teamed up to select 14 films for the "Flesh Mind and Spirit" festival.
The films are an eclectic bunch chosen with no regard to era or nationality and include titles such as Alain Resnais' "Last Year at Marienbad" (1961), Karl Dreyer's "Ordet" (1955), Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (1972) and Charles Burnett's "Killer of Sheep" (1977), as well as the 2008 Korean blockbuster "The Good, The Bad, the Weird."
All films are filmed in their original language with English and Korean subtitles.

8th Gwangju Biennale opens Sept 5- Nov 10, 2009

THE 3RD GWANGJU DESIGN BIENNALE OPENS IN SEPTEMBER
September 18 - November 4, 2009

Under the theme "The Clue", the Gwangju Design Biennale will open its 3rd edition on September 18th 2009 in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, South Korea. It is one of only a few design biennials in the world trying to create a tradition of thinking about design systematically.

The 3rd Gwangju Design Biennale sets out to reevaluate the truism "think globally and act locally" by examining five examples of traditional culture of Korea. These examples will be used to bring the potentialities of very specific local solutions to the fore and reconfigure them in an international design context: Perfect design is enacted in clothing, eating, living, enlightening and enjoying. Because these five human actions form the basis of a complete and harmonious life across all cultures, they are also themes in which designers, who want to improve that life, may search for clues. The extraordinary resources, objects and values upon which Korean culture thrives serve as a starting point for international designers and artists in their creation of new design concepts.

The five themes of 'Clothing', 'Eating', 'Living', 'Enlightening' and 'Enjoying' are expressed with the Korean words of '옷 [Ot]', '맛 [Mat]', '집Jip], '글 [Geul]' and '소리 [Sori]'. The curators of each theme exhibition try to pinpoint their relevance to specific culture and design. 'Clothing' is stratified into subjects: from the significance of traditional costume, to haute couture, to the garment as a work of art. Form uplifts function in 'Eating', where the symbolic color of food and the ceremonial table setting are reinterpreted. The organic spaces of the theme 'Living' offer elemental architectural inspiration. The themes 'Enlightening' and 'Enjoying' examine Korea's unprecedented specializations in the fields of graphic design and music. Each of the five themes will be filtered and interpreted through a set of responses by international artists and designers.

Three expanded projects cross section the five culturally located themes. 'Design to Save', 'Design to Care' and 'Design to Share,' proactively address major topics of global contemporary design such as sustainability, Universal Design and social engagement. Many of these projects utilize the citizens, economy and site of Gwangju with global enterprise. For Korea, the exhibition will be a venue in which to lay the groundwork for a new design culture, propelled, as the title suggests, by assets arising from the expanded meanings of traditional cultural manifestations.

The participating artists and designers of the Gwangju Design Biennale 2009 include among others German automobile designer Peter Schreyer, Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, Moshen Mostafavi, architect and Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, or Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk.

Artistic director is Byungsoo Eun. Eun launched the design brand of VIUM in the US, Korea and Japan in 2001; he performed as a guest designer at Maison de Objet of France in 2004 and he curated Asia Design, the main exhibition of the first Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005. Under his direction 15 curators are responsible for the seven different sections of the biennale.

The first edition of Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005 was titled "Light into Life". 707 designers from 33 countries presented their works. The main exhibition was centered on Asian Design and Future Life, it was accompanied by seven special exhibitions, international conferences, workshops, festivals and performances. A total of 280,000 visitors came to see the Gwangju Design Biennale in 2005.

"L.I.G.H.T." was the title of the second edition in 2007. The main exhibition had five sub-categories: Life, Identity, Green, Human and Technology. 927 designers from 45 countries exhibited their works. The Gwangju Design Biennale in 2007 had 250,000 visitors.

The Gwangju Biennale, which started in September 1995, was Asia's first contemporary art biennale. The first edition was visited by 1.6 million people. More than 500 artists and performers from 60 countries took part in the first edition. Ever since, each edition of the biennale has been visited by more than half a million viewers and the event has grown to become the most influential, respected biennial in Asia and one of the most prominent biennials in the world.

The 8th Gwangju Biennale takes place from September 5 until November 10, 2010. Artistic Director is Italian-born Massimiliano Gioni.

Korean Music Concert for foreigners- June 29, Namsan, Seoul

The Korea Foundation will host its "The Korea Foundation Concert for Foreigners 2009 --- Into the New Tradition" at the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang located in the Namsangol Hanok Village on Monday, June 29 at 7:30 pm.

The concert will feature an exciting performance by "Yeoul," a gayageum quartet playing various genres of music on the traditional Korean musical instrument gayageum, and "wHOOL," a percussion group creating music based on traditional Korean music which people of all ages and cultures can enjoy.

The two groups will perform together in the concert's finale to create beautiful melodies on traditional Korean musical instruments and harmony between traditional and modern, presenting the audience with an unforgettable summer night's entertainment. Hosted annually by the Korea Foundation since 2003 to help foreign residents in Korea understand Korean culture, the concert is free, but requires an advance reservation.

This yearlong exhibition brings together the works of the late Paik Nam-june and Korean-American artist Kang Ik-joong. On display is Paik's multimedia installation and Kang's installation work, made of thousands of paintings, woodcuts and drawings. The two artists may have come from different generations and have distinct artistic styles, but their art continues to enthrall. Benefit concert for comfort women survivors, Hongdae, Sat June 6

Hello,
I don't know if many of you know but there is a group called "the house of sharing" that provides support for comfort women survivors, ("comfort women" is a euphemism for the women who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during WWII).
This saturday night, June 6 the volunteer group is putting on a benefit show in Hongdae featuring korean and non-korean indie bands to benefit comfort women survivors in the Philippines.

Normally, 'house of sharing' only works with korean survivors but we recently found out that filipina survivors (who are called lolas) have it really bad in the Philippines. Unlike korean survivors, lolas don't receive any help from the government so they don't have the money for basic needs like food and medicine.

The entrance fee for the benefit concert is 10,000 and all the money raised from the show will go straight to the lolas.

'Share my reality' group exhibition

"Share My Reality" explores the visual dialogue that arises when two pieces of art are exhibited together, and invites the viewer to engage in this conversation.
The works prompt us to ask ”What is it like living in the world today?”, and the artworks reply with thought provoking alternative answers. Each artist is an autonomous individual who navigates a place and engages in inter-human relations, then imaginatively re-stitches the social fabric through original aesthetic treatments. The pairs of artworks thus relate to each other not just isomorphically but also ideologically.
Taken together, these "diptychs by acquaintance" work together to offer contemplation on the similarities and differences in perceptual realities created by young individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Here’s a little information about exciting things happening this month and in the summer months to come:

1~ Sutras Study Group: Sunday, June 7 at 2pm

Jai Center for Yoga and Health in Apgujeong is hosting a free monthly Yoga Sutras of Patanjali study group, this Sunday, June 7th at 2pm. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the basis of Raja Yoga, the path of concentration and meditation. It is a complete guide for the study and practice of the spiritual path of Yoga. In each session, a few Sutras will be read and an open discussion will follow. We will mainly use the text, "Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Translation and Commentary" by Sri Swami Satchidananda, but feel free to bring a different translation. There are several available for free on the web.


2~ Yoga and Dance Summer Intensive: Early bird registration June 15th

Satya Movement Arts is offering a 5 week summer intensive from June 29 - July 30.
Classes are Monday-Thursday from 11:00am–12:15pm. Modern Dance classes are on Mon/Wed and Vinyasa Yoga classes are on Tues/Thurs.
