The new arts and craft space "Saekki" is offering calligraphy classes for foreigners starting Jan 22.
"Grab a brush and some organic writing paper and begin to write Hangeul in a whole new way. As a minimalist, black and white drapes like wet paint on the walls of a newly installed display featuring Oliver Babin’s latest works.
Like a journey through time, Babin attempts to reveal four steps towards the process of self-actualization. The first begins with a room covered in darkness. Only a glass of milk remains on a dingy shelf. It sits there as if innocent poison, like the clip inspired from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion,” were a woman finds herself in fear of intoxication by a substance waiting to render her helpless.
Welcome to simplicity with the incorporation of small phrases like, “When I was 17.” In total, seven dates are written in reverse order and known as “Pure Consciousness.”
On the second floor you’ll find four framed LIFE magazines; only one highlighting black lettering. This was a first for the magazine, as it traditionally only prints in red ink. But in the memory of John F. Kennedy Jr’s death black seemed the only color appropriate.
Strangely, Babin appears comfortable with death, as it is a reoccurring theme in works like “Hills of Eternity” and “Home of Peace.”
Braille is used in “By the Book” on the third floor where a set of white sheets are displayed but covered therefore, unreadable.
Floor four is like IKEA; you are forced to walk through each of the previous floors in order to reach your goal. He aimed at this design as a reminder to us all; life is worth a second look, a new perspective, and more admiration for what we’ve accomplished and the people we’ve strived to become.

Wild Women Performing Arts Festival and Fundraiser

An eclectic mix of mostly female singers, songwriters and performers gathering to celebrate and to raise funds for the Korean Women's Associations United, an organization that supports women's human rights in Korea.

Performances:
The night starts at 8pm with singer songwriters and poets. From 9pm, some of Seoul's most exciting bands take to the stage, including: Trampauline, Korean "heart-knocking electronica...with an acoustic spirit"; The Literallies, a Texas/Seoul combo with unique instrumentation like "a tandem bike with wobbly handlebars"; Bridget Martin and The Puppycats, led by a folk-punk troubadour with two successful international tours under her belt; and Juck Juck Haeseo Grunge, noisy and talented grunge rockers described by gig guides as "the best band in Korea at the moment." You will also be able to catch Eshe's internationally acclaimed belly dance performance, extracts from The Vagina Monologues, and other powerful performances.

There will be tarot readings available for donations as well as a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses!
A hot way to spend a winter night while contributing to gender equality in Korea.

"Rare" Hongik University Painting department open studio, Dec 15 - 20

Hongik University Art Department (Painting) has an opening night for the exhibition of all students' end-of-year work next Monday evening, Dec 15 at 6pm.
The open studios are in F building, rooms F401,403,405, Seoul campus.
The exhibition continues through to Dec 20.

The Young Korean Artists 2008 exhibit features works by promising artists such as Sang Seok-ho, Kim Si-won, Wee Young-il, Lee Jae-hoon and Che One-joon.


Challenging and inspiring - it's worth the trip down to Seoul Grand Park to see this mixed media show. Especially noteworthy is the powerful installation and painting work of female Korean artist, Safranski Mackerel. (see image below)










Also showing until Dec 7, is a retrospective exhibition by famous Korean painter - Son Sangki.
