1. Art Garden - dynamic
[ Art Garden – Dynamic ] is going to be held for the first time in Sejong Center. The exhibition consists of artworks that their lines and dimensions contain dynamic factors, which are accompanying the movement made by ‘motor,’ ‘wind,’ and ‘manpower.’
The fundamental spirit of such an exhibition originated from the idea of fund and sympathy, in addition to the basic idea of the harmony of artwork and environment in public place.
In other words, it is the exhibition, where viewers get out of the one-sided sensual dimension, and where the mutual sympathy among the artworks, the space, and the viewers, exists, and the objects and participants join the flow of time and the change of nature within the given environment.

Description:
Timmy Graham from USA explores the "Fourth Dimensionalism" in his oil paintings
and two Norwegian artists, Anna Daniell & Sverre Strandberg, parodies commercial contemporary
art scene through their installation work. In addition, it shows that the Korean Youngkyun Kim
develops his idea of individual who cannot help but conforming to the huge power of social system
in his photographs. These artists are short-term resident artists in the 7th residency program
2008-2009 of National Art Studio. This exhibition shows the fruits of art works created by resident
artists during residency period and short-term artists of Changdong art studio stay at the studio for
three months.

*Timmy Graham creates a new concept of "Fourth Dimensionalism" and tries to apply to oil
paintings. What is Fouth Dimensionalism? According to this artist, it is the use of actual spatial
elements for the sole purpose of creating visual imagery. Graham approaches colors scientifically,
the way a mathematician approaches numbers on the number line.

*Anna Daniell & Sverre Strandberg shows the installation "We're Only In For The Money." Two artists
assembles daily necessaries unused for arts and art materials and make a kind of sculpture. Then they
take a photography of it and displays the black/white photos with expensive wooden frame.

*Youngkyun Kim, his story begins at "the report of change of individual attitude in emotion that one
copes with social or individual obsession." Viewers can read in his photographs individuals
expressed as 'distorted self-portrait (illusion)', which means the will to try to free oneself from the
obsessive reality.

My talk info is here and I've pasted the info below as well. It will be Friday at 7pm on the 6th floor of the Fulbright Building, (168-15 Yomni-dong, Mapo-gu - English directions are on KAEC website at www.fulbright.or.kr ).

I know it says today (Tueday Apr 21) is the last day to RSVP, but I think it would be okay to RSVP later, or even just arrive. The RSVP is for a head count to make sure they get enough food. I doubt there will be a flood of unexpected guests b/c it looks like the weather will be rainy then. I'll be talking about my research on hanji (Korean handmade paper) and showing lots of photos and videos about making hanji and related crafts. I will also have a lot of "props" there - hanji and the like.

Summary:

Hanji, Korean handmade paper, has a history on the peninsula that reaches back over one thousand years. With origins in China, papermaking spread to east to Korea and then Japan, speeding the use of written materials, contributing to literate and artistic cultures, nurturing religious traditions, and becoming part of daily life. Each culture developed similar but distinct methods of making long-fibered, strong paper from the mulberry tree. Through travel to various papermills, interviews with scholars, and study with artisans, Aimee has gained greater insight into the history of hanji, its glory days as the preferred paper in East Asia, and its demise with the rise of industrialization. She now seeks glimpses of its future: its role in conservation, the arts, and everyday life. Aimee will give a brief history of the craft, show photographs and videos of how hanji is made, as well as its presence in the contemporary art world, and use material demonstrations to exhibit related crafts, such as textured paper, twisting and weaving, and natural dyeing.

Biography:

Aimee Lee is a Junior Fulbright Researcher in Design and an interdisciplinary artist researching the current state of hanji, Korean handmade paper. As a papermaker, she has learned to make hanji from scratch at Jang Ji Bang, a 3rd- and 4th-generation family papermill in Gapyeong, and is currently studying with teachers of natural dyeing and paper weaving. She is affiliated FIDES International, where she is advised by B.K. Kim, and also advised by Professor Song Dae-Sup at Hongik University. She earned her MFA in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and her BA in Visual Arts from Oberlin College. She has performed extensively in the United States, exhibited internationally, and is now preparing two bodies of work for three solo exhibits in the fall of 2009. Bulgasari is a Monthly underground, experimental, improv concert at Yogiga Art Gallery.

Description:
Bulgasari is the last Sunday of every month. The concert series is free and encourages anyone to perform. The shows typically involve experimental performance art and music, and sometimes live painting. Though the musicians have usually been of the noise/psychedelic nature, Bulgasari has hosted many indie bands and singer-song writers. 1. You can use the Arko Arts Center website to pay via Interpark, but you'll need to register for that.
2. Call Interpark on 1544-1555 and give them your Check (Debit) Card number.
3. Call the festival on 02-3674-2210 or 02-3674-3310 and pay by bank account transfer on an ATM.
4. Go to Arko Arts Theatre before the event and pay at the office which is above the small auditorium. Might be the easiest option. The information desk is not at the front (that's the security man) but near the small auditorium.

LOCATION
All the performances are in the Arko Arts Theatre that's within meters of Hyehwa station exit 2 on the left, a large red brick building. All the workshops are in a smaller theatre that's nearby.

National Museum of Contemporary Art of Korea

This yearlong exhibition brings together the works of the late Paik Nam-june and Korean-American artist Kang Ik-joong. On display are Paik's multimedia installation and Kang's installation work that is made of thousands of paintings, woodcuts and drawings. The two artists may have come from different generations and have distinct artistic styles, but their art continues to enthrall people. Cherry Blossom festival, Yeouido, Seoul, April 3 - 18, 2009

Every year nearly 4 million people visit the Hangang Yeouido Spring Flower Festival, one of the most famous festivals in Seoul. This year, the festival is scheduled to run for 16 days, from April 3 (Friday) to April 18 (Saturday). The theme of this year’s festival will be ‘flowers that bloom from the sky’, and various performances, exhibitions, and events will take place throughout the Yeouido Park and Yeouiseo-ro areas. During the festival period, visitors can admire gorgeous spring flowers such as cherry blossoms, azaleas, forsythias, and royal azaleas set against the backdrop of the Hangang River.

There is also an international arts festival called the VIA festival (VIAF). Between April 9 -13, visitors will also be able to enjoy a number of famous performances and works of art by skilled artists from all over the world. A highlight of the festival will be ‘For Tarantella’, a unique collaborative performance by three performing arts companies from Korea and France, and around 100 other performances will take place during the festival at locations along the cherry blossom roads. Seven performing arts companies have been specially invited from the United States, France, Japan, and other countries, and many companies from Korea will also take part in the festival.

10th Jeonju International Film Festival, April 30 - May 8, 2009

Coming up next month - the 10th Jeonju International Film Festival, April 30 - May 8, 2009. If you love film making, or film watching it's worth taking a trip down to the city of Jeonju to soak up the atmosphere. Jeonju city is about 3 hours south of Seoul.

Sections:
*The International competition - introduces the cinema of new talents worldwide and showing the potential of alternative cinema aesthetics. The section will screen feature films and documentaries with a running time of over 60 minutes. A jury committee consisted of five professionals will select the best cinema which will be given the Woosuk Award with a cash award of U.S $10,000. The second-best cinema will receive the Daum Special Jury Prize and U.S $7000. JIFF Audience Award will be also given to one film selected by JIFF audiences.

* 'Jeonju Digital Project'
Jeonju Digital Project is a digital film production project that not only has festival screenings in mind, but international distribution as well. The three directors, selected by JIFF, receive 50 million won for production costs. They each then produce an approximately 30 minutes digital film, to be premiered at JIFF, using digital video and digital editing equipment. As old as the film festival itself is, without a doubt, this is the core program of the festival.

Three directors choose the film which they want to show to the audience for the section. These three films will be screened with their comments.

*SHORT! SHORT! SHORT!
Since 2007, JIFF started a digital short film project Short! Shot! Short! That supports three directors for their production of short films. This year, 10 South Korean Filmmakers; including both commercial, independent filmmakers will participate to celebrate the 10th anniversary of JIFF will be premiered at JIFF. The primary screening of the completed films by 10 filmmakers will be at Jeonju International Film Festival.

*Cinemascape - The latest works of masters which open a horizon of new aethetics and the films of remarkable new directors will be screened. Dramas, documentaries and foreign short films will be screened.

*KOREAN CINEMA - This section features dramas and documentaries that show the potential of Korean Indie films and new feature films that display the strength of Korean films.
Korean Feature Competition
This section introduces diverse works from Korean independent filmmakers. The best film will be given the 'JJ-St★r Award' and 10 million won. One or two remarkable films will be awarded the CGV Korean Independent Feature Film Distribution Support Award and will be supported by CGV for theatrical release after the festival. Also, 4 audience critics will select the best film, which will receive the Audience Critics Award and 2 million won.
Korean Cinema Showcase
This section shows noteworthy Korean films that have been made recently in the Korean film industry
Korean Shorts Competition
The Choice of Korean Shorts : Critic's week started in 2002 has been changed to complete competition. This section features latest remarkable Korean Short Films.(award related info will be announced)
*Local Cinema in Jeonju
Local Cinema in Jeonju was installed in 2006 in order to support and introduce local films produced in Jeonju. This section will provide a chance to check out the trends of local cinema artists.

*Cinema Palace is a section that will present the joy of film watching. Along with films in the Cinema Palace section, audience will vote for their favorite film which will be crowned JIFF Audience Award.

*Midnight Obsession
One of the most beloved sections of JIFF, Midnight Obsession is a midnight screening for film fanatics who are willing to stay up all night to watch films. It will be screened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

*Stranger than cinema - This section introduces experimental films which are not accessible to general theaters and gives the audience an opportunity to observe the vanguard of alternative film. Jeonju International Film Festival has been making true discoveries of hidden films from non-western regions for the last four years and as a result of these efforts, Cuban, Maghreb, and Soviet films were introduced at JIFF for the first time in Korea.

*Retrospective - Throughout the years, JIFF has presented retrospectives of worldwide masters, such as Hsaio-hsien HOU, Chantal AKERMAN, Pier Paolo PASOLINI, Rainer Werner FASSBINDER, Glauber ROCHA, SHINJI Somai, Ritwik GHATAK and Peter WATKINS.

*Outdoor screening - Films from Korea and abroad will be shown outdoors in the warm spring night. A chance to meet the respective films' directors and actors will also be presented.

House Residency
Idea of sharing artists’ and curators’ houses as an alternative residency space was developed and now we have our first pilot artist. It was informally started Feb 2009 and we already have networks in Seoul, Barcelona, Berilin, and NYC.
House Residency provides intimate relationships, practical artist communiy help, accomodations, and global networks yet tears down conventional pretentious habits among artits and curators(we hope so).

Yaiza Nicolás is an artist based in Barcelona, Spain. She received her BFA from Alonso Cano University of Granada, Spain and she studied one year as exchange program in Fonty’s Art Academy of Tilburg, The Netherlands. After graduated she completed her studies with a MA of Digital Art from Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona. She received different Young Artist Grants and Art Residencies from Pompeu Fabra University, Phonos Foundation, Metrónom, Hangar, SSamzie Space, Junta de Andalucía, UNESCO and Changdong Studio.

Yaiza´s work research about the representation of collective desire in growing economies. Yaiza used to combine 2 elements in order to build an idea, and is common to find in her work the animal figure as a metaphor of human being. Yaiza is interesting in the relation ship between beauty and power, especially after her first experience in Korea.
